More than a casino stop

River Cree opened in October 2006 on Enoch Cree Nation land just west of Edmonton. It now pulls in three different crowds: gamers for a big casino, food fans for Gordon Ramsay Hell's Kitchen — the first in Canada — and hockey families for the Twin Rinks, two NHL-size sheets with public skating and youth programmes.

Rooms

The current hotel has 249 rooms, 11 of them suites, and describes itself as a 4½-star full-service hotel. Every room has a microwave, mini fridge and Keurig coffee maker, and in-room dining is available 24/7. Room types include Traditional King, Traditional Two Queen, a Luxury One Bedroom Suite and a Luxury Family Suite; the official site shows them by video rather than written specs.

What's coming: the new tower

Ground was broken in September 2024 on a $200 million expansion. STAY Magazine and GlobalData describe an 18-storey tower of roughly 230–240 rooms with more than 30 suites, a new pool with two waterslides and a large event space; trade press reported in June 2026 that the exterior was finished, with opening targeted for July 2027.

The casino

1,665 slot machines and 46 table games, with 14 more tables in the poker room. The main facility is smoke-free; Embers is a separate smoke-friendly casino with 405 slots and 14 tables. Alberta's age is 18. The River Cree Players Club is free and takes 15% off the best available hotel rate.

Dining

Hell's Kitchen serves Ramsay classics such as Beef Wellington and sticky toffee pudding at lunch and dinner. The Kitchen is the family restaurant, with a weekend breakfast buffet (Saturday and Sunday, 7 am–2 pm, $19.99) and buffet nights on Friday and Saturday. Tap 25 is the sports bar; Fatburger stays open until 4 am and Cree Subs until 5 am.

Families, shows and getting around

Since July 29, 2024 minors have been allowed in all non-gaming areas — rinks, restaurants and community events — as long as an adult is with them. The pool and whirlpool, a 24-hour fitness centre and a free shuttle to West Edmonton Mall, about five minutes away, make it workable for families. The Venue holds 500 to 2,500 depending on set-up. Edmonton International Airport is about 20–25 minutes by car. Parking is free, and valet is complimentary from 9:30 am to 3 am.

Our verdict

The most family-workable casino resort in Alberta and a serious dinner destination. Come now for Hell's Kitchen and the rinks; come back in 2027 for the new rooms.
